A lot of people complain about why we should study complicated things, just like mathematics and its branches and some of them don’t seem to have any help in our daily lives. People ask why without even looking at the bigger picture. I’ve asked such questions before but found the answers because of one event in my life.

My 3-month-old baby cousin was admitted at the hospital because of pneumonia. For three days, I thought he would be recovering but another news struck us. The baby was then diagnosed with dengue. We couldn’t even contain our emotions into words that time. How could a 3-month-old baby bear it? Two days passed and things got worse, so he has to be moved at the Intensive Care Unit. I was allowed there only once, and saw all the machines and tubes connected to his small body. We prayed hard for his recovery, and almost a week after that we were informed that he was better and could be moved into a hospital room.

But what does it something to do with statistics? It is simple yet broad. Without statistics, those machines and medicines won’t improve to such lengths to support a human body. Because we cannot improve something we can’t measure as meaningful improvement must be data-driven. If those weren’t improved, then things could be a lot harder for anyone to handle. Things would be more complicated and could get out of control. That is only one of the many significance of statistics in our lives if we just look at the bigger picture and start to notice the smaller details. According to Florence Nightangle, “To understand God’s thoughts we must study statistics, for these are the measure of His purpose.” We must not always be complaining but should also be analyzing.
